Message from the President
Being a member of the Barry community is an honor and a privilege for me as a proud alumna of the Class of 1962 and the University’s sixth president.
Barry is a vibrant, ethnically and culturally diverse, student-centered university that celebrates its Catholic, Dominican identity while welcoming students and faculty of all faith traditions. Founded in 1940 by the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan, Barry began as a small liberal arts college for women. While we continue to enjoy the sponsorship of the Adrian Dominicans, now we are a comprehensive university that continues to honor its liberal arts core.
Barry is a mid-sized, coeducational university, committed to preparing graduates for the personal and professional challenges of the twenty-first century. Fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, we offer courses in over 100 undergraduate, graduate, professional and doctoral degrees on our main campus in Miami Shores, at our Law School campus in Orlando, and at other locations throughout the State of Florida.
For our undergraduate students, Barry provides a rich, rigorous liberal arts education that is truly transformational, abundant in opportunities to grow academically, socially and spiritually. With over 8,800 students from almost every state and over 75 countries, the hallmark of our learning environment is the small class experience designed to challenge and engage students.
Drawn by Barry’s outstanding reputation for academic excellence, commitment to community service, and spiritual engagement, students are able to achieve their educational goals through close interaction with a credentialed, experienced and dedicated faculty and a committed and competent administration and staff.
Our dedicated Student Affairs staff has created a rich variety of effective leadership opportunities that enable students to participate fully in the life of the University. Through clubs and organizations, recreational, athletic and volunteer opportunities, students learn the value of collaboration and leadership while forging friendships that will last a lifetime.
I am so proud that our graduates are recognized as champions of our mission to learn, reflect and serve. They are widely known for their outstanding character and competency, but also for their commitment to create a more just society and contribute to the common good. I invite you to visit us, to experience our Miami Shores campus and the vibrancy of our University community. The lush tropical beauty of South Florida and the deep texture of our learning environment are a powerful combination. You may just discover that Barry University is a great place to find yourself.
